Boldini and the Italians in Paris: Between Reality and Impressionism

What: A real treat set within the walls of the famous colosseum, this exhibitions puts on display some of the most rare antiquities that have been seized over the years and rightly brought back to their birth place.

Portraits and self-portraits, women, views of the city and the countryside, scenes of nightlife and everyday life, sketches of a bright and sparkling Paris. These were some of the themes and situations encountered by Italian artists living in Paris during the 19th century. This exhibit displays the results of the intellectual and artistic adventure of young painters from the old Europe in the most modern city of its time. A journey through the life and “Belle Epoque” of the Italian artists in Paris .

 

Caravaggio

Where: Scuderie Del Quirinale, Via XXIV Maggio 16

What: To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of Caravaggio the Scuderie Del Quirinale Museum has organized a magnificent exhibition that brings together from all around the world some of the most important paintings by the artist. An exceptional opportunity to get a comprehensive view of the work of this celebrated Italian master.

There will be on display some of the most famous Caravaggio’s paintings, like Basket of Fruit (fiscella) from the Ambrosian Library in Milan, the Baccus from the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence, David with the Head of Goliath from Rome’s Borghese Gallery, The musicians from the Metropolitan Museum of Art from New York, Lute Player from the Ermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, and Amor vincit omnia from the Staatliche Museum in Berlin.

 

Edward Hopper

Where: Museo Del Corso, Via del Corso 320

What: A collaboration beetwen Museo Del Corso, The Whitney Museum of American Arts and the Hermitage Foundation of Lausanne, this exhibition has already been held with great success in Milan and brings to Rome for the first time a selection of the paintings of Edward Hopper, one of the most influent American artists of the 20th century. Hopper introduces us to middle-class America, unveiling the most intimate feelings of loneliness and alienation.

Besides the 160 paintings already present in the Milan exhibit other famous works by the artist will be displayed in Rome: the beautiful Self-Portrait from 1925-1930, The Sheridan Theatre (1937), New York Interior (1921 circa), Seven A. M. (1948); South Carolina Morning (1955) along with some of its preliminary sketches. Extraordinary works that complete the group of well-known Hopper paintings, like Summer Interior (1909), Pennsylvania Coal Town (1947), Morning Sun (1952), Second Story Sunlight (1960), A Woman in the Sun (1961) and the wonderful Girlie Show (1941).

 

From Corot to Monet. The symphony of nature

What: An exhibition thought to correlate the stylistic innovations of Impressionists with the major comprehension of nature, of culture and of modernism of that period. More than 170 masterpieces, many of which have never been exhibited before in Italy, go through the entire evolution path of Impressionists in representing nature and landscape. The journey starts with the first innovations of the painters of the Barbizon school to arrive to the chromatic triumph of Monet's Nympheas. Certainly not to be missed.

 



1861 – The Birth of Nations in the Great European Painting

Where: Scuderie del Quirinale, Via XXIV Maggio 16

What: To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Italian Unity, the museum of the Scuderie del Qurinale has planned this exhibition that illustrates how European painters reacted to the formation of states and nations during the 18th century.

The American Independence, The French Revolution, and of course the battles to reach the unity of Italy will be some of the most important subjects of the paintings by some of the most important European artists of their time like Goya, Delacroix and David, who felt the need to portray the popular upheavals, and the battles that ensued- a new reality in the making.

 

Van Gogh, Timeless Countryside And Modern City

Where: Complesso Del Vittoriano, Via Di San Pietro in Carcere

What: The details about the exhibition are not totally clear yet, but it will be one of the most important cultural events to take place in Rome this year. The theme around which the exhibit is centred is Van Gogh's depiction of the city, often mysterious and dark and the countryside, bright and powerful under the sunlight.

What: Works of art from some of the most important European museums have arrived to Rome to be displayed at the Capitoline Museums in an exhibition that explores the crucial influence that Greek culture had over Rome, its military conqueror.
