The Italian Open Tennis Tournament (Masters series), also known as the Rome Open, is held every year around May at the Foro Italico tennis park, on the banks of the River Tevere, close to the Olympic Stadium. The clay surface allows for slower but more exciting, flowing tennis, with the Spaniards ruling the roost in the past couple of years. However, there was a surprise last year as Serbian Novak Djokovic, last year’s Australian Open winner, took the title in three sets after defeating unseeded Pole, Stanislas Wawrinka. Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal, the 2007 champion, went down to a shocking defeat in the second round. And Jelena Jankovic, currently the world number one, went on to dominate and win the women’s title last year.

The 2009 tournament will be held from April 25th to May 9th. The men's tournament will take place from April 25 to May 3 while the women’s will start slightly later, from May 1 to May 9.
